Caine McKannon is all about rules. As the Raven Riders Sergeant-at-Arms, he prizes loyalty to his brothers and protection of his club. As a man, he takes pleasure wherever he can get it but allows no one close—because distance is the only way to ensure people can’t hurt you. And he’s had enough pain for a lifetime.

But then he rescues a beautiful woman from an attack.

Kids and school are kindergarten teacher Emma Kerry’s whole life, so she’s stunned to realize she has an enemy—and even more surprised to find a protector in the intimidating man who saved her. Tall, dark, and tattooed, Caine is unlike any man Emma’s ever known, and she’s as uncertain of him as she is attracted. As the danger escalates, Caine is in her house more and more – until one night of passion lands him in her bed.

But breaking the rules comes at a price, forcing Caine to fight dirty to earn a chance at love.

As with most 1,001 Dark Nights novellas, my biggest complaint is that I wanted more – more story, more depth, more emotion and angst.

Although this is a romance, and the romance is central to the story, I would have liked a little more of the suspense and danger to the heroine to help drive it along. Of course, there’s only so much you can do in a novella and the author focused the story where it needed to be but I didn’t feel the underlying sense of urgency that I probably would have felt in a full-length novel.

Once I realized the author intends for this to be the final book of the Raven Riders series, I was especially disappointed. It feels like the series isn’t finished. There are a couple of loose threads I would have liked to see tied up. She hasn’t said absolutely no to Jagger or Phoenix getting their own story (my vote is for Jagger!), but that there is nothing planned right now. So if you’re the type to light a candle to the romance muses, you might want to find a lighter.

~☆Review☆~ The Pilot & the Puck-up by Pippa Grant

Title: The Pilot & the Puck-Up
Author: Pippa Grant

Genre: Sexy Romantic Comedy

 Release Date: February 16, 2018

Blurb
He’s the biggest, baddest, most spider-fearing motherpucker on the ice…

When you’re named after the king of the gods, the world expects certain things of you.

Tough? Damn right.

Smart? Don’t let the hockey uniform fool you.

Large and in charge? Honey, I’m the biggest, baddest, mother pucking-est machine to ever own the ice. I shoot. I score. In and out of the rink. I don’t come early, but I come often, if you know what I mean. And I always leave the ladies wanting more.

Until that chick last night.

I’m no one-thrust wonder, and you’re damn right I’m going to prove to her I can do better. But every time I think I’m finally on my way back into her pants, she one-ups and out-balls me.

I should cut my losses, lick my wounds, and walk away.

But Zeus Berger doesn’t walk away from anything.

Especially when she’s the only woman in the world who might be able to handle me.

The Pilot and the Puck-Up is a standalone romantic comedy featuring a hockey player whose ego is the only thing bigger than his shoe size, the most badass woman to ever fly a plane, rubber chockey (don’t ask), and no cheating or cliffhangers.

☆¸.•*¨*★☆Warning☆★*¨*•.¸☆

I’m not going to review this book. I’m going to warn you.

  1. Don’t read it in public if you’re a giggle-snorter. Actually, you probably shouldn’t read it in public even if you aren’t a giggle-snorter, because you’ll probably giggle-snort anyway.
  2. Don’t read it around people who are going to ask why you’re laughing. Because you might not be able to explain it. They’ll just have to read it for themselves.
  3. Don’t start reading when you have somewhere important to be. Like work. Apparently “I got caught up in this book” is not an acceptable excuse for being late. Book haters.
  4. Pippa Grant has the humor of a fourteen-year-old boy who just saw his first pair of boobs. It’s dirty. It’s inappropriate. It’s freaking hilarious.
  5. If you’re at all serious about the Greek and Roman pantheon of gods, this book might make your head explode because Zeus Berger named his…ahem. Never mind, you can figure that out for yourself.
  6. Pippa Grant gives good newsletter. That’s not so much a warning as it is an FYI.

Excerpt
Zeus Berger (aka the biggest, baddest, most spider-fearing mother pucker to ever play in the NHL)

Coconuts are itchy. I should’ve gone for the watermelons.
But it was a bitch and a half getting that last-minute private fitting at Madame Cosette’s anyway, and the woman probably would’ve had to stitch three bras together and then nailed the damn contraption to my shoulders to get it to hold without losing a melon, so coconuts it is.
Besides, it’s the heels that are gonna be the bigger problem. Damn good thing I have ankles of fucking steel. And my minidress is stretched to max capacity over the coconuts anyway. It’s also in danger of showing my other coconuts, if you catch my drift. And there’s definitely a drift—or is that a draft?—on my other coconuts.
A wolf whistle echoes through the swanky private clubhouse where I’m strolling in with my twin brother on my left and my brother from another mother on my right. A passing server drops a tray of champagne. Conversation stops. And a bunch of stuffy golf pricks gape at us like we’re a mutant alien circus freak show crashing their million-dollar wedding reception. We’re three dudes who have more money than God, more muscles than all the Kardashians’ bodyguards combined, and more fun than cotton candy and roller coasters.

~☆Synopsis☆~

What if Alice didn’t fall down the rabbit hole, but instead, traveled through Lincoln Tunnel into another kind of Wonderland: New York City.

The best day of twenty-five year old Alice Leighton’s life was the day she got to put her nothing special, lil Southern town in her rear-view mirror. Good-bye to phony ‘bless your hearts’ and ‘I’ll pray for you’ crap, all while talking trash behind her back. She’s New York City’s latest addition and she’s going to work her ass off proving she earned her spot in the country’s top grad program.

Never again will she let some jerk derail her future and break her heart. Oh, and no more players. She’s D.O.N.E with the ‘cool guys’.

Getting caught up in Dare Grangeworth, the art world’s resident bad boy, was not part of her Alice 2.0 plan, even if he is just her type, with his beard, tats sleeves and intense green eyes. When he’s not dodging the press or his cultish fan base, Dare’s making art that makes a statement. Women seem to lose their heads around him – all the more reason why he finds Alice’s candor refreshing. He’s used to women giving in – not giving attitude.

He has to get to know this girl, even if it means allowing himself to be the subject of her research. Before too long, he becomes more than a simple outlier she can explain away. And for him everything starts to feel larger than life and upside down, like a heady rush, all while desperately trying not to lose his heart.

Become lost and found in this re-imagined story of Alice and her cast of characters, in a world where Wonderland meets Sex-and-the-City.

~☆Review☆~

The worst thing about this book, is that it ended.

I love the homage to Lewis Carol’s Alice in Wonderland. It’s so easy to see how the characters in TWoY related Carol’s characters. Partly because of the obviousness of the names, but also because of the characteristics of the supporting cast.

Each chapter begins with a Lewis Carol quote that correlates to what happens in the chapter – whether that’s Alice finding her way in a new and strange place, wondering what role she has to play, or trying to figure out which way is up or down.

Alice and Dare are nicely developed and, while they both have their backstories that affect how they react to the other, they aren’t so over blown that as a reader you think, “Well, that’s just ridiculous.”

I read The Wonder of You in about a day and a half. It immediately sucked me in and made me late for work.

Somewhat related: You’d think after 35+ years of reading I’d have it figured out that I can’t just “read a few pages”. But no, not so much.

I loved Alice’s big moment at the end (you’ll know it when you get to it) and was cheering right along with the crowd. Even though TWoY takes inspiration from a fairytale, it is so relevant to what is going on today. I loved the way that was incorporated into the story in such a seamless way without being preachy or lecturey (yes, that’s a word).

If you sign up for the author’s newsletter, you’ll get a bonus epilogue. I haven’t received it yet since I read the ARC, so I’m a little miffed. She’s also looking for reader input on what characters you’d like to see next: Rayna, the Red Queen; Lulu, the White Rabbit; or Caroline: the big sister. Make sure you reach out and let know. I want them all at the same time. Apparently that’s not possible, so someone is going to have to choose for me.

AUTHOR INFORMATION:

Born in California and raised in South Florida, Harper Kincaid has moved around like a gypsy with a bounty on her head ever since. For years, she was a jill of all trades and a master of none, but is now tickled hot pink to pen stories that break and mend people’s hearts for a living. Kincaid believes seduction occurs from the neck up, which is why her characters are smart, sexy, and slightly quirky – and definitely worthy to be your next hard-core book crush.

When not writing, she adores listening to indie, lo-fi, complaint rock played on vinyl,  the theater, well-informed optimism, happy endings (both kinds), and making those close to her laugh ’til they snort. She is a self-admitted change junkie, loving new experiences and places, but has now happily settled in the cutest lil’ town, Vienna, Virginia.
