~☆Review & Excerpt☆~ Watching You by Leslie Kelly

Watching You Cover Final

About WATCHING YOU

Beyond the story blurb, what is WATCHING YOU all about?

I like to think of Watching You as a sort-of cross between a Cinderella story, Pretty Woman, and Psycho.

There’s definitely a Prince Charming-sweeps-the-normal-girl-off-her-feet element. Jessica Jensen is a Cinderella—a former foster kid and orphan who’s learned to take care of herself and takes no b.s.

But there’s also a dark, dangerous mystery enveloping the passionate relationships she gets caught up in with director Reece Winchester.

Somebody is stalking him—and she soon catches that someone’s eye. Things aren’t exactly what they seem, there are old family mysteries the Winchester brothers want to keep hidden that are being dragged out of the shadows and back into the light. There are murders, attacks, and high-stakes danger.

And, I think, there’s a really fun, solid, sexy romance between two exciting and unique people.

✫★REVIEW★✫

I am a longtime fan of Leslie Kelly’s books.  She writes snarky heroines with fun storylines and protective heroes that meet their match.  Her latest, Watching You, is classic Kelly with a few twists.  I like the Hollywood angle and she will definitely keep you guessing until the end.  I look forward to reading the rest of this series as there were definitely a few loose ends when the screen faded to black.

“I’m wondering,” he said, lifting a hand and brushing his fingertips against her jaw, his thumb rubbing against her bottom lip. “Why did she disguise your beautiful face?”

Completely shocked, she couldn’t reply for a moment. Her jaw fell open, and she stared up at him, wondering how he could sound so certain. He wasn’t trying to tease the truth out of her, he sounded like he was absolutely sure she’d modeled for the piece, when in truth, there was no way he could know. She had no tattoos, no distinguishing marks, nothing made her body any different from any other woman’s. He had to be guessing.

But she knew he was not.

“Who told you?”

Liza wouldn’t. She just wouldn’t. But maybe she needed to show Sharon the model release forms, one of which Jess had signed. Might Reece have seen it?

“Nobody told me,” he said, sounding utterly truthful.

“Then how could you know?”

He raked a hot gaze down her body. “How could I not?”

“You…you recognized me?”

He nodded. “The minute I saw the statue.”

She gulped. “No one else ever has.”

“No one else sees you as clearly as I do.”

Wow. Great line. Only, she didn’t think it was a line. He sounded totally serious.

“I’ll repeat the question,” he said. “Why the secrecy? Why did she hide your face?”

Licking her lips, Jess wished she had brought a drink with her. Her mouth was so dry, and it was so darned hot in here. Well, it wasn’t hot in the room, but the heat he put off was melting her like she was a Hershey bar left on a dashboard.

“She didn’t need my face.” Trying to lighten the moment, and cover her embarrassment, she forced a laugh and looked away. “Wanted only for my body. Story of my life.”

“Don’t do that,” he said, his tone forbidding. “Don’t mock yourself.” He took her chin in his hand and tilted her face up to look directly into her eyes. She quickly fell back into wild, hypnotic Reece-land where thought didn’t exist and there was only action and reaction, motion and emotion. “She wanted your face. Didn’t she.”

It wasn’t a question. And Jessica didn’t try to deny it.

“Why did you say no?” he asked, dropping his hand. She immediately missed its warmth, which was crazy since she’d just been mentally whining over how freaking hot it was in here.

“I guess I didn’t want the notoriety. I’m trying to be taken seriously as….” Realizing if she said she wanted to be a screenwriter he might assume she was about to go all Hollywood on him and launch into a script-pitch, she changed direction. “I mean, I work at a bar and already have to fend off grubby men with grabby hands. The last thing I’d want is for any of them to see that piece, recognize me, and decide to be more persistent with their attention.”

His jaw flexed, as if he was gritting his teeth, and the eyes narrowed. “They touch you?”

“Perils of working in a place called Hot Buns.” Seeing his confusion, she added dryly, “We don’t sell burgers, and we wear short shorts.”

He got it now, and the jaw tightening thing got worse. “Why?”

“Why do I work there?”

A nod.

“Girl’s gotta eat.” She gestured toward the statue. “Look at those thighs, I’ve obviously gotta eat a lot.”

His eyes narrowed. “I told you not to do that anymore.”

She gulped. He was deadly serious, as if he had the right to give her orders. It was cave-man. It was unacceptable.

It was kind of hot.

“Self-deprecation doesn’t suit you. You have to know you’re beautiful.”

Good Lord. Reece Winchester was telling her she was beautiful? And he sounded like he really meant it? She knew she was sexy. She had assets and knew how to flaunt them. But nobody had ever called her beautiful.

Now Liza? Oh yeah. Her sister was soft, fragile. Any guy would look at her and think, “She’s so lovely.” Jess? They’d think, “I’d do her.”

☆¸.•*¨*★☆Review☆★*¨*•.¸☆

As with most 1,001 Dark Nights novellas, my biggest complaint is that I wanted more – more story, more depth, more emotion and angst.

Although this is a romance, and the romance is central to the story, I would have liked a little more of the suspense and danger to the heroine to help drive it along. Of course, there’s only so much you can do in a novella and the author focused the story where it needed to be but I didn’t feel the underlying sense of urgency that I probably would have felt in a full-length novel.

Once I realized the author intends for this to be the final book of the Raven Riders series, I was especially disappointed. It feels like the series isn’t finished. There are a couple of loose threads I would have liked to see tied up. She hasn’t said absolutely no to Jagger or Phoenix getting their own story (my vote is for Jagger!), but that there is nothing planned right now. So if you’re the type to light a candle to the romance muses, you might want to find a lighter.

As the oldest Cross brother, the land is his legacy, and he’ll do whatever it takes to make Cross Creek a success—including hiring local widow Cate McAllister to manage the bookkeeping tasks that are growing in his office like weeds. Cate’s as pragmatic as she is pretty, and she rattles his hard-fought composure at every turn.

Cate had known a lot of things about her husband before he died three years ago in a car accident, but how much debt he’d gotten them into wasn’t one of them. She needs her job at Cross Creek, even if her boss is both gruff and gorgeous. But Owen’s a family man, through and through, and the last thing Cate is interested in is anything—or anyone—with strings attached.

As Owen and Cate join forces to right the farm, they discover there’s more to the other than the surfaces shows, and that passion can be found in unexpected places. ✫★Review✫★

Owen is the last Cross brother to fall and he falls hard for local widow Cate.  Cate is trying to get her life back on track three years after the death of her husband and daughter.  At the end of her rope, she volunteers to take a full time job bringing Cross Creek’s books into the 21st Century, even without ever played bookkeeper before.  When Owen begins treating her like Cate and not Poor Cate, sparks fly.  Together they redefine what family means and how to go after your dreams.  This book also gives us Marley beginning to come out of her shell, and big announcements about Hunter and Eli.  Fans of the series will eat it all up.

And don’t miss the first two standalone titles in the Cross Creek series, CROSSING HEARTS and CROSSING THE LINE!

Hunter Cross has no regrets. Having left his football prospects behind the day he graduated high school, he’s happy to carry out his legacy on his family’s farm in the foothills of the Shenandoah. But when a shoulder injury puts him face-to-face with the high school sweetheart who abandoned town—and him—twelve years ago, Hunter’s simple life gets a lot more complicated.

Emerson Montgomery has secrets. Refusing to divulge why she left her job as a hotshot physical therapist for a pro football team, she struggles to readjust to life in the hometown she left behind. The more time she spends with Hunter, the more Emerson finds herself wanting to trust him with the diagnosis of MS that has turned her world upside down.

But revealing secrets comes with a price. Can Hunter and Emerson rekindle their past love? Or will the realities of the present—and the trust that goes with them—burn that bridge for good?

Cocky farmer Eli Cross plays twice as hard as he works. When his latest stunt drums up a heap of negative PR for the family farm, he grudgingly agrees to play host to an ambitious New York City photographer. Her feature on Cross Creek could be just the ticket to show the country what the Cross brothers do best…which is more problem than solution for Eli.

Scarlett Edwards-Stewart has photographed everything from end zones to war zones. She’s confident she can ace this one little story to help her best friend’s failing magazine. At least, she would be if her super-sexy host wasn’t so tight lipped. But the more Scarlett works with Eli, the more she discovers that he’s not who he seems. Can his secret bring them closer together? Or will it be the very thing that tears them apart?

Book Description

Dante Moretti has just landed his dream job: GM of the Chicago Rebels. And screw the haters who think there should be an asterisk next to his name because he’s the first out managing executive in pro hockey. He’s earned the right to be here and nothing will topple him off that perch—especially not an incredibly inconvenient attraction to his star defenseman, Cade “Alamo” Burnett. Cade has always been careful to keep his own desires on the down low, but his hot Italian boss proves to be a temptation he can’t resist. Sure, they both have so much to lose, but no one will ever know…

As Dante and Cade’s taboo affair heats up off the ice and their relationship gets more and more intense, they’ll have to decide: is love worth risking their careers? Or is this romance destined to be forever benched?

About the Author

Originally from Ireland, Kate Meader cut her romance reader teeth on Maeve Binchy and Jilly Cooper novels, with some Harlequins thrown in for variety. Give her tales about brooding mill owners, oversexed equestrians, and men who can rock an apron, a fire hose, or a hockey stick, and she’s there. Now based in Chicago, she writes sexy contemporary romance with alpha heroes and strong heroines (and heroes) who can match their men quip for quip. Visit her at KateMeader.com.

✫★REVIEW★✫

Kate Meader writes hot hockey heroes and Cade and Dante in Undone by You, her latest Chicago Rebels novella, are no exception; though this book is less about hockey and more about being true to yourself and living an authentic life.  Together Cade and Dante figure out what that looks like for each of them individually and as a couple.  This book ends on a HFN, as opposed to a HEA.  I really hope there is a HEA in Cade and Dante’s future.  They both deserve one.

About BLAZE ERUPTING:

From New York Times bestselling author, Rebecca Zanetti, comes a new Scorpius Syndrome/A Brigade Novella

Hugh Johnson is nobody’s hero, and the idea of being in the limelight makes him want to growl. He takes care of his brothers, does his job, and enjoys a mellow evening hanging with his hound dog and watching the sports channel. So when sweet and sexy Ellie Smithers from his college chemistry class asks him to save millions of people from a nuclear meltdown, he doggedly steps forward while telling himself that the world hasn’t changed and he can go back to his relaxing life. One look at Ellie and excitement doesn’t seem so bad.

Eleanor Smithers knows that the Scorpius bacteria has and will change life as we know it, but that’s a concern for another day. She’s been hand-picked as the computer guru for The Brigade, which is the USA’s first line of defense against all things Scorpius, including homegrown terrorists who’ve just been waiting for a chance to strike. Their target is a nuclear power plant in the east, and the only person who can help her is Hugh, the sexy, laconic, dangerous man she had a crush on so long ago.

✫★REVIEW★✫

I have been hooked on Rebecca Zanetti’s Scorpius series from the beginning.  With Blaze Erupting, part of the 1001 Dark Nights series, Zanetti takes us back to the beginning and the Brigade.  Deke and Nora are there and the world has not yet fallen apart.  The cast of characters makes me hopeful that this is not the last Brigade novella and at some point we might catch up to the full-length timeline.  Hugh and Ellie are a fun couple with a second chance even as the world is falling apart around them.  A lot happens in this short installment so the focus is definitely on the action.  Now I’m even more excited for the next book in the series.

Ellie cleared her throat. “You’d need one of the best hackers in the world to do that. There are safeguards upon safeguards in place for coolants.”

Hugh nodded. “Yeah. If I was going to attack a nuclear power plant, I’d have the best in the world in my pocket.” His body started to ache and he released each muscle to try uselessly to rid himself of tension. “Then I’d plant explosives around the spent fuel.”

“It’s nice you’ve planned this out,” Connor muttered.

Hugh flashed a grin, amusement filling him. They were truly suspicious of him. “It’s my job. At least, it was my job.” He had a feeling everything had just changed.

“Suspects?” Deke asked.

Ellie pressed a button, and faces started filling the wall screen. “We’ve narrowed it down to five organizations in the states. Two homegrown and three Hugh has been watching for a year. They have the skills and means.”

“It’s one of these?” Ivan asked, leaning forward.

Hugh ran through the data. “Maybe. We don’t know who else has shown up the last month as we all concentrated on Scorpius and the outbreak. There could be players on our soil that I haven’t tracked.”

“Just great,” Connor said, eyeing the screen. “What now?”

Ellie set her papers down. “We go to the sites and look for anything out of the ordinary. I can only get into the computers onsite and not remotely.”

“Affirmative.” Deke shoved away from the table. “As of right now, you all have top-level clearance. There’s nothing you can’t request or see.” He assisted Nora from her chair. “I think you’re right about New York. Resources have been sent to the bigger cities for protection, and it’d be too hard to hit.”

Man, Hugh hoped he was right. “Or that’s what they’re expecting we’ll think.”

Deke nodded. “Aye. That. For now, we check out the other two plants. Nora, Ivan, and I will fly to Pennsylvania since private planes haven’t been grounded yet. Ivan has expertise here as well. Eleanor, Hugh, and Connor? You guys fly to the Arizona plant. I’ll ask the new president to grease the wheels for you.”

Connor stood. “And if Hugh is a problem?”

“Shoot him,” Deke said absently.

Hugh coughed. Wonderful. He was going to work with these people?

Connor moved for the door. “Everyone needs to be properly suited up. Satellite phone, weapons, and protective gear. I have everything ready in the armory.”

Hugh kept his face blank. Protective gear? Something told him that didn’t mean condoms.

Just what the hell had he gotten involved in?

Blog Tour: Cowboy Stole My Heart by Soraya Lane

CowboyStoleMyHeart_FBCover_presaler1

Mia disappeared and he talked to the horses, wandering down the line to look at all of them. He’d only seen her ride the one, her favorite mare, but he had a feeling she was full of surprises, and her horses all looked impressive. When she didn’t reappear, Sam went looking for her, wondering what the hell was taking so long.

“Hey, do you need a hand back there?” he called out. He squinted in the half-light, dark compared to the full sun glare outside when he ducked through the doorway and into the tack room.

“Oh, shit, sorry, just give me a sec.”

He stopped. Sam stood in the middle of the small room, saddles and bridles covering every inch of wall space, and Mia pressed into one corner, her tears impossible to hide. “Hey,” Sam murmured, striding over to her. Hell, he hadn’t expected her to be crying. He’d thought she might need a hand carrying some gear out, but . . . he didn’t know what to do.

“I’m fine, please,” she said, holding one hand up to her face, the other stretched out in front of her as if trying to push him away before he was even close.

“You’re not okay,” he said, knowing how gruff he sounded but unable to help it. “Come here.”

She shook her head. “Please, I’m fine,” she managed, voice cracking.

“Your mom, huh?” he asked, knowing that there was no way in hell he’d managed to say anything to upset her this much. She was still grieving, he could see that from a mile off.

She nodded, dropping one hand, the other still covering her face. “Yeah,” she whispered. “It’s just I haven’t talked about her for a long time. She’s been gone twelve years so I shouldn’t be reacting like this.”

“Come here,” Sam said, not taking no for an answer this time as he opened his arms and pulled her in.

He held her, tight, letting her cry. She sobbed once, loudly, a noise that made his heart lurch for her, feeling her pain, before she went silent and relaxed in his arms. It had been almost a year since he’d held a woman like this; comforted a woman and held her and felt something for her. He stiffened. Only that woman had played him, ripped his heart out when he’d have done anything for her. Anything.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I’d tell you it’ll get easier, but I doubt it will.”

He didn’t sugarcoat things, even this type of thing, but he did feel for her. She’d tried to talk about her mom all nonchalant to him, laughing about her beautiful stables, when in reality it had torn her in half and left her crying all on her own. She’d lost her mom and her best friend as well; no wonder she’d been prickly when he’d tried to muscle in and take over with the one thing she did have— her horses.

Mia pushed back and he wished she hadn’t. He’d liked the warmth of her against him, the tickle of her long hair catching in his stubble as he’d inhaled her shampoo or whatever it was on her that smelled so damn delicious.

“Sorry,” she murmured, her hands to his chest as she stepped back. “I don’t ever let anyone see me cry.”

He believed it. She didn’t strike him as the type to let anyone see her vulnerabilities.

Sam glanced down at her, at her hands against his chest, at the way she was looking up at him, her eyes wide. Her mouth parted, tear-stained cheeks making her look so vulnerable that it tugged at something inside of him he’d thought was long buried.

“You’ve got nothing to apologize for,” he muttered, slowly raising a hand and brushing his thumb gently across her cheeks to blur the tears away.

Mia stayed still, her palms still planted against him, head tilted. He looked at her mouth, fought the urge to rub his thumb across her soft pink lips. Instead he dropped his hand, skimming past her long blonde hair on the way past. Sam bent a little, eyes on her mouth, imagining what her lips would taste like. He wanted to kiss her so damn bad, wanted to push her up against the wall behind her and kiss the hell out of her. But he didn’t.

He’d sworn off women for a reason, and sexy or not, he wasn’t about to take advantage of his boss up against a wall. Even crying she was beautiful, but he wasn’t going there. He couldn’t go there.

Dammit!

Her eyes were dancing, her lips were parted, her hands were slowly dropping away from his chest. But instead of closing the distance between them, instead of hungrily tasting her lips against his, he took her hands, stepping back and squeezing them.

“You take all the time you need,” he said instead, hearing the husky note of his own voice. “I’ll be out here.”

He walked out, ducking back through the door and out into the bright sunlight again. Goddamn it! What the hell had he just done? He’d always prided himself on being able to keep his shit together, and he’d let himself get way too close to Mia.
